There are many ways to measure what makes a city great. From my perspective as Mayor, I can attest that Sunrise exhibits all the characteristics of a remarkable place to call home.
Over the years, we have introduced a variety of ways to communicate with our residents. As part of this effort, the City produces publications such as Sunrise Magazine, Horizons, an annual report, a calendar and a monthly utility bill insert to keep residents up to date on events, activities, news and issues of importance. Additionally, we hope you'll find this website to be a valuable and regular source of information.
As a result of long-range planning initiatives implemented in the early 1990s, Sunrise has emerged as the heart of western Broward County - a place where nationally acclaimed shopping, dining and entertainment destinations complement a wide array of civic amenities. We will continue to exercise regional leadership towards a sustainable regional economy and an integrated transportation system.
With the development of carefully chosen new projects and an ongoing emphasis on planning initiatives - including redevelopment - our City will continue to develop and flourish as the center of western Broward while preserving its strong sense of community and high quality of life.
One significant new project is Metropica, an urban mixed-use development designed to encourage a diversity of social experiences by offering class A office space, full service restaurants, upscale retail and luxury high-rise residences, all bordering a lush central park.
Our redevelopment efforts in original Sunrise have been a tremendous success in all respects - providing residents with new community facilities, a revitalized business district and a safe environment, among other benefits.
Sunrise possesses a diverse economic base that affords opportunities for both residents and corporate citizens, and generates funds that enable us to continue to invest in our neighborhoods. We will continue our dedication to the City's ongoing success in developing a dynamic commercial and retail sector. The City's economic development initiatives not only increase Sunrise's offerings - they also help raise property values, directly benefiting our residents.
Sunrise is a thriving, diversified community offering attractive, well-maintained neighborhoods that provide a safe haven for families. A full-service City, we maintain a professional, award-winning team of firefighter-paramedics housed in state-of-the-art facilities, and a nationally accredited police department. We are home to some of the finest recreational facilities and programming in Broward County. Our recreational facilities have won national and statewide recognition for their excellence. I am also proud of the strong relationship we have forged with the school system, and our ongoing, collaborative efforts to make our schools even better.
We are also fortunate to have a number of family-friendly private enterprises in our City, including an innovative new concept in entertainment for children. Wannado City, a $40+ million indoor recreation enterprise, which recently opened as the first interactive environment of its kind in the United States. Wannado City enables children to role-play as many as 250 careers, including lawyer, TV anchor, doctor, firefighter, banker, pilot and police officer.
Quality of life is of paramount importance in Sunrise. The City's team works around the clock - in both high profile and behind-the-scenes positions - to deliver the services our residents desire. I am proud of the dedication demonstrated by our 1,300 employees, and the pleasure they take in a job well done. Sunrise will continue to make significant commitments toward improving our community and strengthening the pride we take in living and working here. We strive to be not only a great city, but also the best city we can possibly become.
