In conjunction with Fire Prevention Week, held during the week of October 8th each year, the Fire-Rescue Department focuses on fire safety skills that will help reduce injuries and deaths to children - often one of the most vulnerable groups. The program's popular National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) curriculum features visits from Sparky the Fire Dog, the NFPA mascot. One of the highlights of the Department's fire prevention efforts is a poster and essay contest for elementary school students. The latest entries are on display in our presentation of 2009 Fire Prevention Week Poster Contest Winners. "After the Fire" Prepared by the Federal Emergency Management Agency's United States Fire Administration, "After the Fire" is a comprehensive document designed to assist fire victims. It provides information on recovering from a fire, including such topics as what to do during the first 24 hours, insurance considerations, valuing your property, replacing valuable documents, salvage hints, fire department operations, and more.
