Police Color Guard
The Police Color Guard presents the flag with pride at public events.
Inside the Department

The Sunrise Police Department is comprised of the following divisions:


Uniform Division
The Uniform Division is the largest division within the Department, representing 75% of the agency's sworn officers. The division includes:

Bullet Patrol Unit. Provides    immediate response and preventive patrol within Sunrise.
Bullet Office of Community Policing. Serves as a liaison between the community and their beat officers, and coordinates crime-prevention programs.

Bullet Traffic Unit. Maintains comprehensive traffic enforcement throughout the City, and performs select traffic investigations.

Bullet Public Service Aides. Handle a wide variety of minor criminal incidents and non-hazardous or administrative assignments.

Bullet Reserve Officers. Serve on a part-time basis at the BankAtlantic Center events, performing all duties and responsibilities of full-time sworn officers.

Bullet Special Details. Administers off-duty special details for all authorized personnel, serving as the Department's court liaison and analyzing weekly payroll.

Bullet K-9 Unit. Deploys two officers and their canine partners, Rex II and Amigo, to assist patrol officers in suspect apprehension, narcotics detection and evidence searches.

Bullet Public Information Officer. Distributes information regarding community policing activities, traffic alerts and crime-prevention tips.


Detective Division
The Detective Division is responsible for all criminal investigations generated by the Department. Detectives specialize in a variety of crimes, prepare case files for the state Attorney's Office, and provide training to the community on a host of topics. The division includes two sections - Crimes Against Property and Crimes Against Persons - as well as the following:

School Resource Officers (SROs)
School Resource Officers foster positiverelationships
between the Police and Sunrise students.
"Bullet" School Resource Officers (SROs). Specially trained to teach the Drug Abuse Resistance Education curriculum, as well as serve as role models, mentors and problem solvers in Sunrise schools.

"Bullet" Crime Scene Unit. Provides advanced support for detecting, collecting, analyzing and preserving evidence.

"Bullet" Evidence and Property Unit. Houses property of evidentiary value for criminal cases, and stores recovered property for safekeeping.
Bullet Crime Analysis Unit. Provides information on crime patterns and trends.

Bullet Victim Advocate. Offers information and services to crime victims and witnesses, including crisis and grief counseling, referrals to social service organizations, crime compensation assistance, and court accompaniment.

Bullet Juvenile Diversionary Program. Provides various forms of alternative intervention, allowing first-time juvenile offenders charged with misdemeanor crimes to be handled on a community level.

Bullet Youth Services Unit. Works with Sunrise youth and coordinates the City's Police Explorers program.

Bullet Public Information Officer. Distributes information regarding criminal activity.


Administrative Services Division
The Administrative Services Division provides administrative and logistical support to the entire Department. To maintain effective operations and provide adequate controls, the members work closely with other Divisions. Administrative Services is comprised of:

Bullet Personnel and Training Unit. Recruits and hires all Police officers and civilian personnel, and develops and tracks in-service training programs.

Bullet Research and Planning Unit. Maintains and monitors administrative and operational procedures as they pertain to Department grants and certifications.

The Communications Unit
The Communications unit uses GPS technology
to dispatch assistance to citizens.
Bullet Communications Unit. Receives and prioritizes emergency calls, and dispatches assistance to citizens.

Bullet Records Unit. Maintains all offense/incident, arrest and accident reports, and provides archived reports as needed.

Bullet Support Services Unit. Processes and verifies requisitions and purchase orders, distributes ancillary equipment, provides end-user support of business applications, and assists with budget preparation.


Cross-Divisional Units
The Department maintains several units that cross divisional boundaries:

Bullet Specialty Units. Provide specialized services and include the SWAT Team, Crisis Negotiation Unit and Honor Guard.

Bullet Vice, Intelligence and Narcotics (VIN) Unit. Handles vice, narcotics and gambling investigations, often in partnership with state, regional and federal agencies.

Bullet Internal Affairs Unit. Investigates complaints against the Police Department and its employees. Complaints that can be resolved by an employee's immediate supervisor are reported to the Unit for analysis and record keeping, while allegations of a more serious nature are referred to the Unit for further investigation. All complaints against employees are documented by Internal Affairs and reported to the Chief of Police.
