Advisory Boards

Sunrise maintains several boards comprised of advisors appointed by the City Commission. Unless otherwise noted, boards are comprised of seven members who each serve a one-year term. Advisory boards may meet monthly, or on an as-needed basis. Please refer to the City's Event Calendar for meeting schedules.

Board Descriptions
Affordable Housing Advisory Board. This 11-member board reviews all matters related to recommending monetary and non-monetary incentives and strategies for affordable housing. Members are required to represent one of the following sectors: affordable housing builders, bankers, labor, for-profit and non-profit providers, low-income persons, City employers, realtors, essential services personnel, the local planning agency, and the City.

Board of Adjustment. This board reviews applications for zoning variances and makes recommendations regarding the applications to City staff.

Consumer Advisory Board. This board considers complaints of residents of the City involving alleged inferior construction of buildings and appurtenances or inferior appliances, and any other matters which shall be determined by the board to be proper matters for its consideration. The board shall have no authority or jurisdiction to consider matters over which the City Commission has authority or jurisdiction.

Cultural Affairs Advisory Board. This board serves in an advisory capacity in matters pertaining to cultural affairs. Responsibilities may include: advising on the development of cultural affairs programs and events; aiding in coordinating programs and events; and evaluating programs and events.

Economic Development Board. This board serves in an advisory capacity in matters pertaining to economic development in the City. Responsibilities may include: cooperating with other governmental agencies and civic groups in the advancement of economic development; recommending policies, procedures and philosophies on economic development; advising on the development of long-range economic development planning; and aiding in coordinating economic development programs with the programs of other governmental agencies and voluntary organizations.

Education Advisory Board. This board serves in an advisory capacity in matters pertaining to education. Responsibilities may include: participating in an information exchange via school newsletters and principals' offices with the administration of each City school; coordinating the activities of the City with those activities of local schools, colleges and universities in order to promote educational opportunities for residents of the City; developing recommendations regarding programs that may be created by the School Board of Broward County to enhance educational opportunities in the City; identifying and attracting state and federal programs and grants in direct support of City schools; and promoting the public image of City schools.

Leisure Services Advisory Board. This board serves in an advisory capacity in matters pertaining to parks and recreation. Responsibilities may include: recommending policies, procedures and philosophies on recreation services; advising on concerns and priorities of development of recreation areas, facilities, programs and services; advising on the development of long-range capital improvements; evaluating the effectiveness of parks and recreation facilities; and helping communicate the policies and functions of the Leisure Services Department to the public.

Planning & Zoning Board. This board serves in an advisory capacity in matters pertaining to planning and zoning. Responsibilities may include: reviewing all proposed amendments to the Sunrise Zoning Map and making recommendations concerning said amendments; reviewing all site plans and making recommendations; serving as the architectural review board for the City of Sunrise, reviewing all architectural drawings submitted in conjunction with the site plan approval process and making recommendations; and approving any waivers to the City's sign ordinance.

Social Services Advisory Board. This board serves in an advisory capacity in matters pertaining to social services and events available to residents of the City of Sunrise. Responsibilities may include: assistance in coordinating events and programs; and reviewing programs and events after they occur.

Sunrise Historical Commission. This commission collects, arranges, records and preserves historical material and data, including books, pamphlets, maps, charts, manuscripts, family histories, U.S. census records, papers and other objects and material illustrative of and relating to the history of the City. In addition, the commission procures and preserves narratives of early residents, and collects material of every description relative to the history and schools and churches in Sunrise.

Unsafe Structures Board. This board hears and determines appeals from actions and decisions of the building official; hears and reviews the application of the building official for review of his or her action where his or her decision, as indicated in a notice of violation, has not been complied with; affirms, modifies or reverses the decisions of the building official upon appeal or on application for review; through its secretary, transmits the record with all exhibits, instruments, papers, and transcripts of its proceedings to the court in the event of an appeal; hears and determines appeals from actions and decisions of the building official and building department pursuant to the provisions of the applicable minimum housing code; and all other duties and powers provided for in the Florida Building Code, and Florida Building Code Broward Edition, as amended from time to time. The board consists of nine members, who are required to represent one of the following professions: registered engineer, registered architect, general building contractor, electrical contractor, attorney at law, plumbing contractor, real estate appraiser, real estate property manager, citizen with experience and background in the field of social problems. The members serve a three-year term.
