Shelters
The location of shelters is determined by Broward County's Emergency Management Agency and the American Red Cross. Residents who would like to go to a shelter should visit the County's Web site for a complete shelter list, as well as advice on what items to bring. Some shelters, such as those allowing pets, require pre-registration.

In general, the schedule for opening shelters will be announced on local radio and television stations. Currently, the shelters located closest to Sunrise are:

  • Plantation Elementary School, 651 NW 42nd Avenue, Plantation
  • Fox Trail Elementary School, 1250 Nob Hill Road, Davie
  • Falcon Cove Middle School, 4251 Bonaventure Boulevard, Weston

Special Medical Needs and Vulnerable Population
Broward County operates a Special Medical Needs Shelter Program for qualified residents in an evacuation area in the event of a hurricane. Special needs residents are defined as persons with health-related problems who do not qualify for admission to a public shelter operated by the American Red Cross due to the nature of their health care needs. If you feel you qualify for a special needs shelter: YOU MUST REGISTER IN ADVANCE, BEFORE A STORM THREAT. Call the Broward County Elderly and Veterans Services Division at 954-537-2888 or TDY 954-537-2882.

Additionally, the County has developed a Vulnerable Population Registry to help emergency responders better plan for recoveries from hurricanes and other disasters. Residents who plan to shelter at home and are considered vulnerable due to a disability, frailty or health issue are invited to register online at www.broward.org/atrisk, or contact the Broward County Call Center at 954-831-4000.

Individuals with special medical needs should register with
the Utilities Department in advance of hurricane season.
Residents who would like to register can call
(954) 888-6065 or (954) 888-6072.

Tips for Seniors and Those with Special Needs
Hurricane preparation is essential for senior citizens. Shelters should be considered a last resort in your evacuation plans because many cannot accommodate people with special needs or provide the attention you may require. Here are some things you will need to plan for prior to the hurricane season:
  • Plan on taking care of yourself without electricity. Remember that the person taking care of you may not be available right before and directly after the storm. Make other arrangements beforehand or go stay with a friend or relative.
  • During a power outage, elevators will not work. If you live on an upper floor of a condominium or apartment building, consider asking if you can stay with a friend on a lower floor.
  • At some point during a hurricane, the City may have to suspend public safety operations to protect the well being of emergency personnel. We would not be able to assist you during this time period.
  • If you are elderly, frail, or a person with disabilities and have friends or relatives that can help you with your property, housing and welfare, contact them now so that they can include your needs as part of their hurricane planning.
  • Make a list of prescribed medications, and make sure you have one month's supply on hand. You should also make copies of the prescriptions. Your pharmacy's records may not be available right away.
  • If you normally require a special diet, make sure you have at least three day's supply of it in containers that will be easy to open. If you are staying with a friend or relative, make sure you bring food with you.
  • Transfer to a manual wheelchair if you are in a battery operated one. You may not be able to recharge the batteries in a power outage.
  • Make sure family members know your hurricane plan and how to reach you after the storm.
  • Individuals who currently have medical aids such as wheelchairs, walkers, canes, toilet seats, etc., should label everything with your name, address and phone number. In the event you need to be evacuated to a facility where many people are using similar medical supplies, the labeling will help identify which items are yours during your stay, as well as when you leave.
  • With the approach of an oncoming storm, the City of Sunrise's Utilities Department will begin using free chlorine in its drinking water treatment system to provide additional protection. This free chlorination could cause problem for patients on kidney dialysis whose equipment may be impacted by the change in water treatment. The Utilities Department maintains a list of patients within our water service area who would need to be notified in the event of free chlorination.
