Markham Park is west of the Sawgrass Expressway and just north of West State Road 84.
This sprawling, 666-acre County park is perched at the edge of the Everglades Conservation Area, and boasts such distinctive amenities as the Fox Observatory, a target/shooting range, a model airplane field, and mountain bike trails totaling near 11 miles.
Athletic facilities include a tennis/racquetball center, a biking/jogging path, and volleyball areas. A series of interlocking lakes offers opportunities for fishing and the use of personal watercraft.
Markham Park's popular outdoor target range is adjacent to a 1,600-square-foot clubhouse with snack bars and a meeting room. Two 120+ capacity and three 60+ capacity picnic shelters - all with grills, tables and water, and two with electricity - are available for rental, and other picnic tables and grills are scattered throughout the park. The park's large campground includes 86 sites for RV and tent camping.
Markham Park is also the site of an approximately three-acre dog park. The canine playground - which celebrated its grand opening in March 2005 - is divided into separate fenced sections for large and small dogs. It features smooth, durable Bermuda grass, as well as eight-foot-wide asphalt paths where owners can walk or jog with their pets. Three shade shelters - two with refrigerated drinking fountains - provide resting areas. The park features a centrally located dog wash area for canines of all sizes, in addition to a separate washing area for large dogs.
