An Update on Hurricane Irma Clean-up

The City of Sunrise continues to work tirelessly to collect the debris left in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma. We have a disaster debris management contractor, hired before the storm, that started collecting debris from our neighborhoods and parks less than one week after the storm passed.

Unfortunately, Hurricane Irma arrived on the heels of Hurricane Harvey, which had already demanded a significant amount of resources to clean up Texas and Louisiana. This immediately limited the trucks available to pick up our storm debris. In addition, the widespread damage from Hurricane Irma impacted most of Florida along with portions of Georgia, South Carolina and Alabama. This devastation created a significant and dramatic need throughout the southeastern U.S., where resources are already limited because of Hurricane Harvey. The trucks that collect storm debris will travel all over the country to the affected regions. However, because of the need across so many states and such a large area, there are currently not enough trucks available to respond to all of the communities that require them. As a result, communities across Broward County and the State of Florida are struggling to clean up quickly. While we expected to have most of the debris in Sunrise removed from the streets within several weeks, it is possible this could now take months. However, the Sunrise City Commission and our staff will continue to do everything we can to bring more trucks into our neighborhoods to expedite the clean-up process.

Community leaders from across Broward County have been united in their efforts to make State and Federal officials aware of the severity of this problem. The communication with these officials has been direct and ongoing since the storm passed. You can be assured that we will not stop fighting on behalf of our residents until we have successfully recovered from Hurricane Irma.

Although the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has not yet authorized reimbursement for the collection of debris from Sunrise’ private streets and neighborhoods, the Sunrise City Commission recognized the need for our City to do everything it could to help our entire community recover. In an emergency meeting on September 15, the City Commission directed staff to collect debris from our private roads and neighborhoods, along with the public roads that are already approved by FEMA.

What can you do to speed up debris collection from your neighborhood?

Please remember to separate your regular garbage, recycling and bulk trash (all of which are picked up by Republic Services) from your storm debris, which is mostly trees and fences (and will be picked up at the curb by our storm debris contractor). Also, don’t place plastic bags full of debris in the pile with branches and fences, as the storm debris trucks won’t collect these bags. And, with so much storm debris to be picked up, these trucks fill up quickly; if they leave before getting to your house, they are most likely going to empty the truck and will start back where they left off.

As a reminder, it is illegal to dump storm debris or other items on property that you don’t own. If you see anyone dumping trash or debris illegally, you should immediately call our Police Department at (954) 764-4357. If you have debris that you want to get rid of before the City can get to your home, the Broward County Landfill is accepting vegetative debris, bulk waste, and construction debris from residents for a fee.
