For more than 30 years, the City’s Social Services program has provided Thanksgiving baskets
to Sunrise families in need. Each Sunrise Thanksgiving basket has the ingredients for a complete home-cooked meal, including a turkey, stuffing mix, canned and fresh vegetables, cranberry sauce, apple juice, dinner rolls, and a pie. The baskets provide not only the gift of a meal, but also the shared time and memories that come with its preparation.
The Tuesday before Thanksgiving, we were able to present 175 families
with holiday baskets. We have many people and organizations to thank for their role in this wonderful endeavor:
- Sunrise City Commissioners, employees, and community partners who donated food items, gift cards, and volunteer hours. We’re grateful for the help of the Greater Sunrise Chamber of Commerce, Humana MarketPoint, local Wells Fargo branches, Ally’s Comfort Café, the South Florida Muslim Women’s Organization, The Bridge Church, the Sunrise Lakes Phase IV Men’s Club and Social Club, Cub Scout Pack #309, Boy Scout Troop #705, and the Sunrise Fire-Rescue Benevolent Association.
- School social workers, as well as staff members from Family Central, Arc Broward, and the Aging and Disability Resource Center of Broward County, who worked with our City social worker to identify residents to receive the baskets.
These baskets represent a true community effort, and for that we are especially thankful.
