The City of Sunrise is now a recognized honoree of the 2019 Safe Streets Summit
, South Florida’s annual conference for the Complete Streets initiative to build safer and healthier streets for all users. Sunrise received nominations for the Complete Streets Community
award and the People’s Choice for Best Project
award highlighting the new bike lanes on Sunset Strip.
“We’re extremely honored to have opened new bike lanes that have not only been enjoyed locally, but have attracted attention regionally and nationally for their fulfillment of transit best practices,” says Sunrise Mayor Michael J. Ryan
. “These innovative improvements have helped transform the neighborhoods in the corridor, to connect parks, neighborhoods, and businesses, and to improve safety for riders and vehicles. The City of Sunrise is proud to be acknowledged by the Safe Streets Summit for these projects.”
The Complete Streets Community Award will be presented to a local government or organization in Miami-Dade, Broward, or Palm Beach that has done an outstanding job engaging the community in planning for Complete Streets. The People’s Choice Award winner will be selected by votes tallied from all attendees of the Safe Streets Summit. It is focused on specific projects within the tri-county area that have promoted safety and mobility within the transportation system. Projects can include quick-build or permanent and long-term projects. Safe Streets Summit attendees will have an opportunity to vote for the best Complete Streets focused project.
These award nominations follow the openings of two new bike lanes on 44th Street and Sunset Strip in 2018 as well as the recent national designation of Sunrise as a Bicycle Friendly Community
by the League of American Bicyclists in December 2018.
