General Hiring Practices
Sunrise follows a merit employment system, whereby each applicant is considered on the basis of his or her qualifications. Applications are screened by the Personnel Department for completeness and reviewed to determine if the applicant meets the positions minimum requirements listed on the job posting. If all requirements are met, a copy of the application is sent to the hiring department. It is up to the hiring department to contact applicants for interviews. Due to the large number of applicants, the City will only be able to notify applicants who are considered for further processing.
The hiring department reviews the applications to determine who may be the "best match" for the position, and then contacts only those candidates selected for an interview. After the interview process, the hiring department recommends the person they deem most qualified.
The applicant may then be given a conditional offer of employment, and may thereafter be required to have a physical examination and drug screening, both provided by the City. A conditional offer of employment is not binding until a candidate has passed a physical examination based on City standards for performance of duties. Any applicant who fails a required drug test will not be hired. Police officers and firefighters may be required to undergo additional screenings, including polygraph and psychological examinations.
After the successful completion of all required screenings/exams, the applicant will be contacted to establish a start date. A probationary period of at least nine months is required for all full-time, non-management employees. Police officers and firefighters must successfully complete a twelve-month probationary period.
Original applications remain on file for approximately six months to a year. To be considered for future vacancies (other than Police Officer or Firefighter), you may contact the Personnel Department at (954) 838-4522 to verify your application is still on file, and obtain the forms required to apply for a new position.

As provided in the Florida Statutes, preference in initial appointment will be given to applicants who are eligible for Veterans' Preference. Eligible applicants must complete the Veterans' Preference section of the application at the time it's submitted, and include a copy of their DD214 (separation papers) indicating character of service. Applicants must also include any additional required documents to support their level of preference eligibility such as their VA Letter of Disability if applicable.
City of Sunrise Resident Preference
Applicants who are residents of the City of Sunrise, and who are deemed to be qualified for an open position may be given preference over an applicant with the same qualifications who does not reside in the City of Sunrise, provided such preference is applied consistent with the applicable requirements of state and federal law. Sunrise residency documentation will be determined based on two forms of ID (one from each of the lists below) at the time of application.
PROOF OF RESIDENCE (Domicile)
One current piece of evidence from the following sources in the applicant's name, spouse's name or relative of applicant:
Current telephone or electric bill
Rent receipt with the name of lessor and contact information/mortgage statement
Lease agreement with name of lessor and contact information
Home Purchase contract including specified closing date, with copy of deed to be provided within 60 (sixty) days of closing date
AND one of the following:
Current Florida Driver's License/Florida Identification Card
Cellular telephone bill
Credit card statement
Bank account statement
United States Postal Service confirmation of address change request or evidence of correspondence
delivered through U.S. Postal Service. Declaration of Domicile form from the County Records Department
