General Hiring Practices
Sunrise follows a merit employment system, whereby each applicant is considered on the basis of his or her qualifications. Applications are screened by the Human Resources Department for completeness and reviewed to determine if the applicant meets the positions minimum requirements listed on the job posting. If all requirements are met, a copy of the application is sent to the hiring department. It is up to the hiring department to contact applicants for interviews. Due to the large number of applicants, the City will only be able to notify applicants who are considered for further processing.

The hiring department reviews the applications to determine who may be the "best match" for the position, and then contacts only those candidates selected for an interview. After the interview process, the hiring department recommends the person they deem most qualified.

The applicant may then be given a conditional offer of employment, and may thereafter be required to have a physical examination and drug screening, both provided by the City. A conditional offer of employment is not binding until a candidate has passed a physical examination based on City standards for performance of duties. Any applicant who fails a required drug test will not be hired. Police officers and firefighters may be required to undergo additional screenings, including polygraph and psychological examinations.

After the successful completion of all required screenings/exams, the applicant will be contacted to establish a start date. A probationary period of at least nine months is required for all full-time, non-management employees. Police officers and firefighters must successfully complete a twelve-month probationary period.

Original applications remain on file for approximately six months to a year. To be considered for future vacancies (other than Police Officer or Firefighter), you may contact the Human Resources Department at (954) 838-4522 to verify your application is still on file, and obtain the forms required to apply for a new position.

EEO and ADA Compliance
The City of Sunrise community has a population which is richly diverse. The effective provision of governmental services within such a diverse community requires the services of an equally diverse employee population.

The City of Sunrise is, therefore, committed to providing an employee workforce which, in all positions and at all levels, fairly reflects the community it serves. The City encourages all segments of its population to become involved with, and seek employment in, City government.

To achieve this goal, it is the policy of the City of Sunrise, binding on all officials and employees, to offer equal employment opportunity to all persons regardless of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, sexual orientation, marital status, genetic information, or disability who are qualified for the jobs they are seeking.

The City will further take whatever steps are necessary to ensure that all employment practices, including, but not limited to, compensation, benefits, layoffs, promotions, training, terminations, hiring, and recruitment, are administered in a manner that provides full and fair opportunity to all persons.

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the City is required to reasonably accommodate qualified individuals with a disability. The requirement applies to the application process, any pre-employment testing, interviews and actual employment (but only if the City knows that an accommodation is needed). If you are disabled and require an accommodation, you may request it at any time by contacting the City of Sunrise Human Resources Department at (954) 838-4522. Because some types of accommodations may require preparation, we suggest that you make any requests as early as possible.

Veterans' Preference
As provided in the Florida Statutes, preference in initial appointment will be given to applicants who are eligible for Veterans' Preference. Eligible applicants must complete the Veterans' Preference section of the application at the time it's submitted, and include a copy of their DD214 (separation papers) indicating character of service. Applicants must also include any additional required documents to support their level of preference eligibility such as their VA Letter of Disability if applicable.

City of Sunrise Resident Preference
Applicants who are residents of the City of Sunrise, and who are deemed to be qualified for an open position may be given preference over an applicant with the same qualifications who does not reside in the City of Sunrise, provided such preference is applied consistent with the applicable requirements of state and federal law. Sunrise residency documentation will be determined based on two forms of ID (one from each of the lists below) at the time of application.
