Please take the necessary steps to prepare your family and your home for hurricane season - which runs from June 1 through November 30 each year.
Create (and Practice) a Household Disaster Plan
If you need to leave your home, where will you go – and how will you keep in touch? Maintain an up-to-date list of contact information and share it with family members and friends. Visit www.ready.gov/hurricanes

Assemble an Emergency Kit
If a storm hits, you may need to survive independently for several days. Prepare now by placing your family’s necessities in plastic bins or bags that will keep them dry (and portable). According to Ready.gov
(and its Spanish-language counterpart, Listo.gov
), a basic emergency kit could contain:
- Water – one gallon per person per day for at least three days
- Food – at least a three-day supply of non-perishable items
- Manual can opener
- Disposable cups, plates, and utensils
- First aid kit and any prescription medicine required by family members
- Personal hygiene items
- Radio (battery-powered or hand-crank)
- Extra batteries
- Cell phone with chargers and backup batteries
- Cash or traveler’s checks
- Copies of important documents – such as birth certificates and insurance policies

Make Sure Your Yard is Ready, Too!
Once a hurricane watch or warning has been issued, it’s too late to cut back vegetation and have it safely removed. Any debris that remains at the curb can damage your home – or your neighbor’s home – when the wind picks up. You should examine all trees and other foliage and make arrangements for any necessary tree maintenance. Trees on properties other than single family homes may only be trimmed by contractors that are insured and under the supervision of a licensed tree care professional. Trees on single family homes may be trimmed by a homeowner following Broward County and City of Sunrise tree trimming guidelines. Contractor generated tree trimmings are not eligible for bulk collection and must be removed and disposed of by the contractor. In order to ensure that all licensing requirements have been met, a City of Sunrise Tree Trimming Permit is required.
If a storm warning has been declared, residents should bring loose objects and equipment inside that could become projectiles in high winds (e.g., patio furniture, bicycles, garbage carts) and anchor objects that are unsafe to bring inside (e.g., grills, propane tanks). Do not place tree trimmings, landscaping debris, or other items out for garbage or bulk trash collection just prior to a storm. These services are discontinued prior to and following storm events until it is deemed safe.

The City of Sunrise is not in a hurricane evacuation zone. This means that healthy, non-vulnerable residents can remain at home during a storm. If you decide to evacuate, your first and best choice is to stay with family or friends (or in a hotel) outside the evacuation area. Your second option is to stay in one of Broward County’s General Population Shelters. Three of them – located at Lyons Creek Middle School (Coconut Creek), Everglades High School (Miramar), and Falcon Cove Middle School (Weston) – are pet friendly. Special Needs Shelters
If you are dependent on electricity for your medical needs, or have a medical condition that requires additional care (but not hospitalization), a Special Needs Shelter may be appropriate for you. These shelters are staffed by medical personnel and have back-up electricity for essential medical equipment. Pre-registration for the Broward County Special Needs Emergency Sheltering and Transportation Program is strongly encouraged. Vulnerable Population Registry
Residents who are at-risk due to frailty or disability – but who decide to stay home during a storm – are encouraged to provide their location and contact information to Broward County’s Vulnerable Population Registry. The registry is not a guarantee of assistance; however, it is a tool that helps the County and municipalities, including Sunrise, better plan for emergencies.
