At no cost, energy savings can be achieved through behavior change, even if you have no experience or skills in home improvement. With this in mind, the first step in any effort to improve your home’s efficiency is to evaluate your current energy use and identify potential upgrade opportunities.

Get started with these NO COST energy saving tips:
  1. Complete FPL's Home Energy Survey (it’s FREE), schedule by calling FPL at 1-800-342-5375.
  2. Turn off lights when not in use.
  3. Turn the fan off when room is unoccupied - fans cool people not rooms.
  4. Close the drapes or other window covers in the summer to block out the heat, especially in your southern and western facing windows.
  5. Use your toaster oven or microwave instead of your oven.
  6. Check refrigerator door gaskets to ensure a tight seal (test it by placing a dollar bill between the door and the unit. If the bill slides out easily, air is leaking and the hinge needs to be fixed).
  7. Let foods cool down before putting them in the refrigerator or freezer.
  8. Run dishwasher on full loads and use the air dry option.
  9. Use the right-sized pot on the stove - match the pot to the burner size.
  10. Donate or recycle a less used second refrigerator.
  11. Wash your clothes in cold water.
  12. Clean the lint trap after every load.
  13. Activate power management settings on your computer and monitor (learn how to at and search “power management”).

  5. Seal gaps around clothes dryer vents.
  6. Use a "smart" power strip as a central “turn off” point for electronics when not in use.
  7. Use an insulating blanket on your older electric water heater, available at most local home improvement stores.
  8. Check your HVAC air filter every month and change it every 3 months at a minimum, following manufacturer’s instructions.
