"Free" Chlorination of City Water System: July 1-22

The City of Sunrise maintains the highest quality standards to provide clean, safe drinking water to our Utilities Department customers, which include the cities of Sunrise, Weston, Southwest Ranches and parts of Davie. From July 1 through July 22, the Utilities Department will be using "free" chlorine in its drinking water treatment system to provide additional protection against bacteria.

This temporary treatment of the water system is a common practice for water suppliers that use a chlorine (chloramine) water treatment method. This periodic program is mandated by the Broward County Health Department.

The procedure does not cause any adverse health effects. However, some individuals may notice a slight change in the taste, odor or color of the water during this time.

For more information regarding the City of Sunrise's treatment system, please contact the Utilities Department at (954) 888-6000.

Sunrise Launches Public Safety Alert System

On Tuesday, May 12, the City of Sunrise unveiled the new Gianfranco Rivoli Public Safety Alert System. The alerts, available by subscription, will be delivered via e-mail and/or text message - depending on the method(s) a resident chooses.

A Gianfranco Rivoli Public Safety Alert will be broadcast only when an emergency arises that requires the attention and cooperation of Sunrise residents. Examples may include an Amber Alert (missing child), Silver Alert (missing senior), BOLO ("be on the lookout" notice), or HAZMAT (hazardous materials) incident.

The alert system is named in memory of Gianfranco Rivoli, a 6-year-old Sunrise resident who passed away in January 2009.

Interested residents are invited to register online by providing their name, e-mail address and/or cell phone number.

The Gianfranco Rivoli Public Safety Alert System is the City's latest innovative effort to increase communication. The City also offers the Sunrise Source - a bi-monthly e-mail newsletter about programs, services and facilities - as well as an automated telephone notification system for its Utilities customers.

Landscape Recovery Program for Homes and Businesses

The City of Sunrise has experienced a significant loss of tree canopy in recent years, largely as a result of hurricane damage and drought conditions. In an effort to help property owners restore landscaping while minimizing their costs, the City has implemented a two-tier Landscape Recovery Program:

Category I provides for a 50% reduction in fees for landscaping and irrigation permits through September 30, 2009. This category applies only to single-family and multi-family residences.

Category II - for owners of non-residential property and homeowner association common areas - also provides for a 50% reduction in fees for landscaping and irrigation permits. In addition, the City will make staff available to help develop a detailed landscape and irrigation installation schedule designed to bring a property into compliance within 18 months.

  • Protect Your Landscaping from
    Ficus Whitefly

Ficus whiteflies - small, winged insects - are causing considerable damage to ficus trees and hedges throughout southeastern Florida. They feed on the underside of leaves, leading to wilting, yellowing and, ultimately, leaf drop.

If you have ficus on your property, you should be aware of available options for whitefly control. The University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences offers a ficus whitefly overview Utility Bill PDF designed to help homeowners identify this insect pest as well as treat and/or prevent whitefly damage.

    Customer Service Surveys Now Available

The City of Sunrise is seeking the input of its residents and customers as part of a new initiative to enhance customer service. Two surveys - designed to gauge satisfaction with the Leisure Services Department and Public Service/Utilities Billing Division - are now available online and at seven locations throughout the City.

The postcard-size surveys can be filled out at a City facility and dropped into a locked box, or taken home and mailed back to the City free of charge. Customers can also visit our Customer Service Page to complete the questionnaire. Survey responses are confidential.

During 2009, the survey program is expected to expand to solicit feedback on all City departments and services.

The Leisure Services surveys are available at:
Sunrise Civic Center Administrative Office, 10610 West Oakland Park Boulevard, 2nd Floor
Sunrise Civic Center Athletic Club, 10610 West Oakland Park Boulevard, 1st Floor
Sunrise Tennis Club, 9605 West Oakland Park Boulevard
Springtree Golf Course, 8150 Springtree Drive

The Public Service/Utilities Billing surveys are available at:

New River Civic Center, 60 Weston Road

Get Involved in Sunrise: Apply for an Advisory Board Position

The Sunrise City Commission is seeking applicants for its eleven advisory boards. These boards offer valuable input and assistance regarding City projects, programs and policies. Each board focuses on a particular area of interest - such as education, cultural affairs, recreation programming or economic development. Positions on two highly specialized boards - the Affordable Housing Advisory Board and the Unsafe Structures Board - are also available.

For a description of each board and its duties, as well as an application packet, visit our Advisory Boards page, or contact the City Clerk's office at (954) 746-3333.

Board appointments will be made by the City Commission on an ongoing basis until all of the positions are filled. Applicants will be subject to the provisions of Sunrise City Code Section 2-76 (f), and as such, shall undergo a comprehensive background check.

Utility Customers: Pay Bills Online or by Phone

The City has introduced two new, convenient payment options for its Utilities customers. Utilizing Western Union's Speedpay system, customers may now make credit card, debit card or check payments online or by phone. Speedpay may be accessed via our Payment Options, page or by calling 1-866-537-9041. A $2.75 convenience fee currently applies to all Speedpay transactions. Effective March 1, 2009, Speedpay will instead charge a $3.75 convenience fee.

Western Union's Speedpay joins a trio of existing payment options. Sunrise Utilities customers can also choose monthly automatic bank drafting (which carries no transaction fee), mail-in payments, or in-person payments at one of three locations featuring walk-up windows and drop boxes: City Hall (10770 West Oakland Park Boulevard), Village Civic Center (6800 Sunset Strip), and New River Civic Center (60 Weston Road).

In addition to expanded payment options, Sunrise now provides its utilities customers with a means of accessing their account information online. Customers can visit our View Utility Account page for account status, prior bills and consumption patterns.

For additional information, visit our Public Service/Billing page or call (954) 746-3232.
