ABOUT THE EXHIBIT
We Walk Apart, We Move As One invites audiences into a vibrant, immersive exploration of identity, heritage, and collective rhythm through the work of Dominik Ambroise. Rooted deeply in her Haitian ancestry, Ambroise’s practice is a celebration of cultural memory, an ever-evolving dialogue between past and present, individuality and community. Her large-scale abstract works pulse with life, built from thick layers of acrylic paint, textiles, and mixed media that create richly textured surfaces. These materials are not merely aesthetic choices, but intentional references to the tactile and layered histories of Caribbean life, echoing everything from ceremonial dress and domestic fabrics to the physicality of labor, resilience, and celebration.
Ambroise’s compositions are driven by movement and rhythm, drawing inspiration from the sounds and gestures of Haitian music and dance traditions. Sweeping gestures, bold color palettes, and intricate patterns suggest both improvisation and intention, mirroring the syncopation of drums, the fluidity of the body in motion, and the communal energy of shared cultural expression. Her work does not depict figures in a literal sense; instead, it embodies their presence, capturing the sensation of being within a collective experience while maintaining a deeply personal perspective. Each canvas becomes a space where memory is layered, fragmented, and reassembled, inviting viewers to find their own connections within the work.
At its core, this exhibition is a celebration of joy, an essential and often radical act within diasporic narratives. Ambroise embraces joy not as a simplistic emotion, but as a powerful force of resistance, healing, and continuity. Her work honors the richness of Caribbean culture through vibrant color, layered storytelling, and an unapologetic embrace of beauty and complexity. We Walk Apart But Move As One ultimately serves as both a tribute and an invitation, urging audiences to reflect on their own identities, to recognize the unseen connections that bind us, and to move, together, in a shared human rhythm.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Dominik Ambroise is a Haitian American abstract artist based in South Florida whose work centers on resilience, healing, and joy. Born and raise in Port-au-Prince, she experienced a life-changing car accident at age 20 that left her with visible scars and deeply affected her self-image. For years, she hid behind clothing and silence, until she found painting, a sanctuary where she could process pain and transform vulnerability into beauty.
Dominik began drawing in 1982 while studying Childhood Education, a path that reflects her commitment to emotional growth and creative expression. She later expanded into painting in 2000 and, after immigrating to the U.S. in 2006, refined her technique through courses at Miami Dade College and classes at Oolite Arts and the Pérez Art Museum Miami.
Her abstract work is rich with textured layers, bold colors, and expressive movement. Using palette knives and unconventional objects, she creates surfaces that reflect both her inner journey and her desire to uplift others. Her latest solo exhibition, Unbreakable Light, presented as part of the Epic Art Residency 2025, celebrates transformation, self-acceptance, and the joyful power of embracing one's true self.
