Communities around the country are upgrading to LED (Light Emitting Diode) street lights for the same reason residents are switching to them in homes: they last much longer than traditional lights, are more reliable and resilient, and use far less energy.

The City of Sunrise is currently partnering with FPL (Florida Power & Light) to complete the second phase of a Street Light Conversion Project. Over the course of the project – which began in September 2021, with completion expected in early 2022 – FPL will convert 736 city-maintained street light fixtures along public roadways west of University Drive, installing LED bulbs to replace the HPS (high pressure sodium) lights currently in use. This is in addition to the 620 fixtures converted in phase one of the project, east of University Drive.

LED light fixtures produce a white light that can make colors, lines and objects easier to distinguish, which ultimately improves visibility and safety for pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers in your neighborhood. Please see the sample photos provided on this webpage.

Should you have any questions about phase two of the Street Light Conversion Project, please call the City of Sunrise Public Works Engineering Section at (954) 888-6011, or email publicworks@sunrisefl.gov.
