The City of Sunrise, Florida is now announcing $2 million in new funding due to the instrumental leadership of Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who successfully secured approximately $15 million in federal funding for several high priority South Florida community projects.
The funds allocated to Sunrise will be used to replace an aging City of Sunrise Utilities Department pump that manages stormwater and provides flood protection to thousands of acres of residents and businesses, including those in neighboring communities in western Broward County.
“Stormwater Pump Station #8 was nearing the end of its useful life, and Congresswoman Schultz was tremendously vigilant in helping Sunrise replace it so we can continue to reliably serve the greater Sunrise community that depends on our Utility infrastructure,” said Sunrise Mayor Michael J. Ryan. “These funds—and the hardware they will secure—provide peace of mind to a growing community that we can manage large volumes of water in neighborhoods and businesses including Sawgrass Mills, the largest outlet and value retail shopping destination in the United States.”
In addition to the funding for the City of Sunrise, other local projects receiving a portion of the $15 million in federal funding include:
- —$1.77 million to fund a pump station in Davie’s Shenandoah Drainage District that will improve drainage capacity and enhance water treatment;
- —$3 million for C.W. Thomas Park in Dania Beach to rebuild a recreational, social and civic community center; and
- —$500,000 for the PACE Program in Broward County to expand its teletherapy services to hard-to- reach areas including Davie, Dania Beach, Sunrise, Hollywood, Weston, Pembroke Pines, Cooper City, Southwest Ranches, Hallandale Beach and Aventura.
This year’s federal budget also provided record funding for the Everglades restoration project. The $350 million provided this year adds to the $1.1 billion offered in November’s federal infrastructure bill.
“Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz has provided invaluable support for the City of Sunrise and regional needs impacting all of Broward County,” continued Mayor Ryan.
A presentation ceremony will be held on Wednesday, May 4th at 10:30 a.m. for the Congresswoman to present the City with the award in the form of a mock check. This event will be held at the City of Sunrise Stormwater Pump Station #8, located at 14201 NW 2nd Street, Sunrise, FL 33325.
