The City of Sunrise proudly announces that Deputy Mayor Jacqueline A. Guzman—a single mother of 3, former Discovery Elementary PTA Volunteer and Westpine Middle PTO President, two time Heart Attack Survivor and longstanding advocate for women’s heart health—has been selected as the 2nd Vice President of the National League of Cities (NLC) Women in Municipal Government (WIMG) constituency group.

For Guzman, this moment represents a major milestone in a journey defined by perseverance and service. From her early days volunteering in Sunrise schools to her rise as one of the city’s elected leaders, she has built a reputation as a fighter for women and families. Her new national role places her at the forefront of shaping priorities that influence NLC’s National Municipal Policy and elevate issues affecting women across the country.

“I’m honored to represent Sunrise on a national stage,” said Deputy Mayor Guzman. “As a single mom and a woman who has worked hard for every opportunity, I am committed to lifting the voices of women—not just in Sunrise, but across America.”

Guzman’s selection took place during the 2025 NLC City Summit in Salt Lake City, Utah. She will serve alongside WIMG President Lisa Ford of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, and WIMG 1st Vice President Amy Shuler Goodwin, Mayor of Charleston, West Virginia.

She is set to become WIMG’s 1st Vice President next year and ascend to President in 2027, with plans to bring the constituency group to Sunrise for their annual Summer Conference—an initiative expected to highlight the city and support local economic development.

In addition to her new role with WIMG, Guzman serves in leadership positions within NLC’s Hispanic Elected Local Officials (HELO) constituency group and the Race, Equity, and Leadership (REAL) Council.
