Daniel J. Ransone is the Chief of the Sunrise Police Department. He works closely with the City Manager to promote departmental goals and works cooperatively with other City directors and elected officials to ensure that quality services are delivered to the community on a daily basis. In addition, it is his objective to continue to nurture and elevate the relationships and partnerships developed within the community and to remain vigilant in providing the most effective policing services in order to exceed community expectations.
Biography of Daniel J. Ransone
Chief Daniel J. Ransone began his professional career in 2000. He attended both Broward College and Santa Fe College (Gainesville, Fl) and graduated from Kirkpatrick Criminal Justice Institute, Police Academy. In October of 2000, Chief Ransone became a member of the Sunrise Police Department. Chief Ransone served as a patrol officer and conducted community policing within the assigned areas of the City and participated in crime reduction and DUI enforcement operations. In addition, he acted in the capacity of Field Training Officer and was assigned to the Honor Guard and SWAT team. In 2008, he transitioned to Detective and enhanced his investigative skills. In 2009, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and served as a first-line supervisor for the Uniform Services Division. During this time, he researched and developed a Less Lethal Shotgun Program and established a Supervisory Response to Critical Incident Training for Road Patrol Supervisors. In 2013, Chief Ransone became the Commander of the SWAT Unit and collaborated with the implementation of the SWAT Medic Program, the Explosive Breaching Program and the integration of K-9 into the unit. He planned the 2012 Multi-agency SWAT training for Broward County SWAT Commanders, managed the training and evaluation of the SWAT Team and planned and led numerous tactical operations. As well, he supervised the budget and equipment procurement for the team.
In 2014, Chief Ransone was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant where he was a Road Patrol Commander responsible for the daily operations of a 21-member police platoon charged with providing safety and security to the City of Sunrise.
In 2019, Chief Ransone, was promoted to the rank of Major and was first assigned to the Uniformed Division where he commanded a division of approximately 180 personnel consisting of 4 Platoons, Special Operations Section, Community Policing Unit, Traffic Unit, SWAT, Canine Unit, Citizen Volunteer Patrol and the School Resource Officers. He was instrumental in implementing and managing the transition of the Special Operations Section from under the Uniform Division and was then assigned as Major to the newly established Special Operations Division. This newly created Division now included approximately 100 personnel consisting of the Community Resource Unit, Public Information Unit, Traffic Unit, Red Light Camera Program, SWAT, Canine Unit, Citizen Volunteer Patrol, and School Resource Officers. He was instrumental in cultivating community engagement programs which included the Community Police Academy, Law Enforcement Advisory Board, and the growth of the department’s community events.
In November of 2020, Chief Ransone was reassigned and served as the Major of the Administrative Services Division. His responsibilities included the oversight of a $49 million-dollar budget with the responsibility to make financial recommendation to the Chief of Police. Knowledge of rules, regulations and policy related to expenditure of seized funds and assets were also encompassed in this assignment. Additionally, managing the vital units assigned to this Division which include Information Technology, Personnel, Training, Payroll, Research and Planning, Accreditation, Records, and Logistics.
Lastly, In April of 2021, Chief Ransone was designated as the Major of the Criminal Investigations Division. During this time, he led a division of approximately 55 personnel comprised of both sworn and non-sworn staff. This division consisted of Criminal Investigation, Strategic Investigations, Property Crimes Unit, Federal Task Force Unit, Crimes Against Persons Unit, Crime Suppression, Crime Scene, Property and Evidence, Crime Analysis, and Victim Advocacy. His responsibilities incorporated the oversight of all major criminal investigations while working in conjunction with the City Attorney’s Office, State Attorney’s Office, United States Attorney’s Office as well as our Police Legal Advisor and fostering a working relationship with Municipal, County, State and Federal Law Enforcement Partners.
During his career with the Agency, Chief Ransone earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice Management, he attended and graduated from the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy, Session 283rd Executive Management Training, he attended the Southern Police Institute (SPI), 78th Command Officer Development Course and he attended the 175th Command Institute for Law Enforcement Executives. He has also earned several departmental awards and received numerous letters of commendation.
Daniel J. Ransone was chosen as the Chief of Police and has assumed the responsibilities of former Police Chief Anthony Rosa upon his retirement in June 2023.
