Recycling is one of the best habits we can take part in to care for the environment, but are you doing it correctly?
Please join us in sharing these four simple tips with all members of your household—including children—to move towards a cleaner and greener Sunrise community!
- Tip #1: Know What to Throw
Only recycle empty, clean and dry items in the following categories: plastic and glass containers, cans, paper, and flattened cardboard.
- Tip #2: Empty, Clean and Dry Only
Small amounts of food or liquid residue can contaminate a batch. Check and rinse yours, if necessary.
- Tip #3: No Foam or Plastic Bags
Loose recyclables only, please! Plastic bags, bubble wrap, and foam containers can’t be processed.
- Tip #4: When in Doubt, Leave It Out
Mixed material items, like those that contain two or more recyclable materials, should be separated or placed in the trash. Toys, clothes, and housewares are also not recyclable.
Please help Sunrise to stick to these standards and reinforce recycling best practices in your household and throughout the community. For a visual that you can share, please refer to our Recycle Right tip sheet.

ACCEPTABLE MATERIALS include empty, clean, and dry items in the following categories:
- Cans made of aluminum or steel
- Glass containers of all colors
- Plastic bottles and containers
- Cardboard that has been flattened and then folded or cut to fit inside the cart
- Paper such as newspapers, magazines, paperback books, and other 100% paper goods
UNACCEPTABLE MATERIALS are summarized below:
- NO food-contaminated boxes or containers. These items contaminate entire batches of recyclable materials and should be placed in the trash. Items must be empty, clean and dry to be recyclable.
- NO foam, plastic bags, or bubble wrap. Recyclables should be placed loose into the cart without bags or packing/shipping materials.
- NO clothes, toys, or housewares. These items can be donated or placed in the trash.
- NO mixed-material items. Items that contain two or more materials that are otherwise recyclable need to be separated into parts in order to be recyclable. For example, an item made of both metal and glass is only recyclable if they are separated before being placed into the cart. If they can't be separated, it should be placed in the trash.
- NO items made mostly of recyclable materials that also contain some non-recyclable materials. Mirrors, cookware, ceramics, and light bulbs are not recyclable.
- NO household hazardous waste. These items can be dropped off at specific HHW events and locations.
