The City of Sunrise offers a wide variety of youth sports programs to encourage the participation of children of all age groups and levels of experience. Athletics help promote good sportsmanship and cooperation. In addition, youth sports provide families with opportunities to foster common interests.
We understand that there are many factors that families must consider before enrolling a child in any extracuricular program. In order to help parents make informed decisions regarding their child's involvement in youth athletics, we have compiled overviews which include program descriptions, estimated time commitments, and sports seasons.

Types of Programs
Recreational youth athletics programs are designed for children who want to have fun and get active in a non-competitive environment. Participants are placed through a blind draft system that attempts to create balanced teams, and there are mandatory play rules in place. A family's time commitment includes three practices and/or games a week per season (which generally runs no longer than four months). Games and practices are all held at parks and facilities within Sunrise.
February - May
June - August
August - October
October - January
Travel athletic programs offer a more competitive environment. Children must try out to play on these teams, and players are selected by each team's volunteer coaches. There is no "must play" rule. The time commitment for travel programs can be up to five days a week, and seasons can run all year. Travel outside the Sunrise area may be required for games and tournaments.
Other Athletic Programs.
July - November
The City of Sunrise offers a variety of other youth athletic programs which include but are not limited to:
• Start Smart Soccer
• Start Smart Baseball
• Start Smart Basketball
• MLB Pitch, Hit and Run
• Basketball Clinics and Camps
• Soccer Camp
Leisure Services encourages the friends and families of our players to attend sporting events and cheer on the teams. All spectators are asked to comply with the Spectator's Code of Conduct. Attendance at the events and adherence to the Code will ensure that everyone involved will have a memorable and positive experience.
The start of each new sports season brings with it the need for volunteer coaches in all age divisions. We are often faced with having more children that want to play a sport than adults who are willing to volunteer to coach them. The support and encouragement that volunteer coaches provide benefits all of the players on a team. If you have never coached before, we will be happy to provide you with instructional materials to help and support you. Another alternative is to volunteer as an assistant coach. Coaches will be selected immediately following the registration deadline. All coaches are required to be fingerprinted, undergo a criminal background check, and complete a free CPR/AED certification course.
If you are interested in serving as a coach, please complete the application
for Youth Athletics volunteers and return it to the Leisure Services Department for processing. Thank you for your involvement!
