United States Census 2020 is coming April 1st. Everyone counts in the City of Sunrise, Florida.

The Census is Historic

Once every 10 years, the non-partisan U.S. Census Bureau conducts a count of every person living in the United States and their basic data. Our nation’s founders believed this information to be so important that they mandated the census in the U.S. Constitution!

The next scheduled census day is April 1st, 2020, and for the very first time, responses can be submitted online, by phone, or by mail. Your answers help determine how federal funds get allocated to our State and City as well as how you're represented in Congress over the next 10 years.

It's very important that everyone counts in Sunrise.

The Census is Confidential and Secure

Strict federal law protects census responses. Census Bureau employees take a lifelong pledge of confidentiality to handle data responsibly and keep information private. No law enforcement agency – not the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, or any other agency – can access or use your personal information at any time. Data collected can be used only for statistical purposes that help inform critical decisions, including how much federal funding our community receives.

The Census is Easy and Convenient

In 2020, for the first time ever, the U.S. Census Bureau will accept responses online and by phone – but you can still respond by mail if you prefer.

The Census Bureau is comprised of talented and innovative people who are passionate about their work. The Census is Critical to Our Community

It’s essential that everyone in Sunrise is counted. Here’s why:

  • It’s about $675 billion in federal funds. The distribution of more than $675 billion in federal funds, grants and support to states, counties and communities are based on census data. That money is spent on schools, hospitals, roads, public works, and other vital programs.
  • It’s about fair representation – in Florida and at the federal level. Every 10 years, the results of the census are used to reapportion the House of Representatives, determining how many seats each state gets. In addition, state officials use census data to redraw the boundaries of the congressional and state legislative districts to account for population shifts.
  • It’s about our day-to-day quality of life. You’d be surprised by the many ways census data is used in our community:
    • The City of Sunrise and Broward County use the census to make decisions regarding public safety and emergency preparedness.
    • Residents use the census to propose and support local initiatives.
    • Businesses use census data to decide where to build factories, offices, and stores – which create jobs.

Taking part in the census is your civic duty: it’s a way to participate in our democracy and say “I count!” For more information, visit
