Program Promotes Volunteerism and Youth Literacy

In May 2013, Sunrise was awarded a $12,640 City Challenge grant from the Community Foundation of Broward. The funding has been earmarked for the City’s new Sunrise Reads program – a volunteer initiative designed to promote youth literacy by tapping the talents and experience of retired Sunrise residents.

The City Challenge grant is part of the Community Foundation of Broward’s Re-engage for Good initiative, which connects the growing numbers of new retirees with high-impact service opportunities to address local city challenges. “The best way to engage residents, who often become disconnected from their community after retirement, is at a local civic level,” said Foundation Program Manager, Lindsey Linzer. “These grants give cities new ways for retired residents to give back to their communities in meaningful ways.”

City Challenge draws on the Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Cities of Service model, a coalition of more than 150 cities representing 50 million Americans, which leverages resident service to solve pressing local challenges.
